Swiss Triathlons have a new contender – Verbier X Triathlon
Over the past three years, Verbier X Triathlon has been training hard on the Swiss Triathlon circuit. From a home-grown event, it is working towards recognition on the international triathlon stage.
A DnA Affair has been proudly involved since its inception. As event organisers, our focus at this great sporting event is all about the food. With some very hungry competitors, our mission is to provide healthy, nutritious food.
With this summer’s triathlon prep well underway, we wanted to share this event with you.
Try the Verbier X Triathlon on for size
Verbier X Triathlon differs from your standard ironman competition. If you’re going to put yourself out there, you’ve got to be pretty hardcore. According to Olympic guidelines, average triathlon distances are 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run.
123 Cross has organised this event with its environment in mind. Based in the valley of the Verbier ski resort, Verbier X Triathlon has been adapted accordingly. Mountain triathlons are trickier because of the altitude and lower oxygen levels. They also require a different setup.
Road-biking has been replaced by mountain biking. Road running is now trail running. Swimming in the ocean or a lake is now a bracing dip in the Gouille. The literal translation is a puddle or a pond. This is a glacial man-made lake.
If the Gouille is under 14°, it is mandatory to wear triathlon wetsuits. Even the more brave-hearted athletes would need. Fortunately, summer temperatures have already raised the temperature to a balmy 22°.
Sporting options for everyone
Located in the Val de Bagnes, Verbier X triathlon positions itself as one of the few mountain bike triathlons on the circuit. Offering a selection of races, the organisers bring top-class athletes such as Ladina Buss, Samuel Mud and Xavier Dafflon together with less sporty participants. They’ve created a multi-sport event for all levels. The top events are:
Cross Tri Classic is for the top athletes with 1500m swim, 25.5 mountain bike ride and finally 12km trail run all at altitude.
Cross Tri Sprint is a walk in the park in comparison with 650m swim, 15.5km ride on fire roads and 6km run on trails.
Expert rider but not so strong in the water? Make a team. You can do both these options as a relay team. So much more fun. 123 Cross has made this mountain triathlon as inclusive as possible with lots of other participation options including the Fun Triathlon and a Kid’s Tri.
Summer Party in the Village
Switzerland and the Swiss are very conscious of getting their work-life balance right. So yes, to balance this arduous mountain bike, the Fete d’Ete is fun for everyone. The weekend of 15th and 16th June has been set aside for triathlon. 123 Cross is also promoting a summer village party. Come down with the kids and go paddle-boarding or water-zorbing. Test the e-bikes. Have a massage or just grab a beer.
Food to feed an army of athletes
Director and Co-founder at A DnA Affair, Dave, will be in charge of the catering on the day. With years of BBQing experience, come and grab a taste of a real ‘strayan Barbie.
Proud of our local produce and our local suppliers, we have chosen to stay local. This is in line with our low carbon footprint and zero waste policies.
Our meats are provided by our phenomenal local butcher, Georgy Maret, from Boucherie Maret. Hotel Gietroz in Le Chable has sourced us a great selection of salmon. We will also be serving a vegetarian BBQ option. A DnA Affair does adventures, accommodation but on this occasion, it does salads. Awesome salads, if we say so ourselves!!
Pomodoro from Sion is coming up to the mountains with a tasty choice of pasta and five different sauces. Gluten-free, lactose-free, as well as vegetarian options, means no-one is going to miss out.
Freshly-made sandwiches with local cheese and hams are being supplied by Boulangerie Michellod. Come early as they’ve also got croissants. Coffee and croissants what a way to start the day. Thanks to Garage Saint Christophe for providing us with coffee for that all-important caffeine boost.
After running around, you might want to sit back and take in the sights. Again working with local suppliers, we’ve got soft drinks, wine and beer on offer. Eaux Gazeuses here in Le Chable is supplying soft drinks. While Soleil de Valais will bring sunshine to our day with their local wines.
We’ve got a great offering of beers with three amazing breweries joining us with their newest brews. Winslow Beer Co is bringing along its brand new Token larger. If you want to get the party started, you’ll find it with Sahib, their white IPA at 6.8%. Not far behind is a total must IPA, the very hoppy Epenette, supplied by Brasserie de Volleges.
This is a sporting event after all, we can’t forget the non-drinkers. White Frontier will be joining the summer party with their brand-new low alcohol beer.
Come down and support this super local sporting event. Why not grab a cold one and snack on a snag (sausages) or two while you’re here.
Feel like spending the weekend in Le Chable (or even Verbier), contact Dave, our Aussie master BBQer. He is also our in-house accommodation expert.
