As part of its Autumn Lake Adventures series, read all about the latest A DnA Adventure over on Lago d’Iseo.

Lago d’Iseo

Since the summer of 2016, Lake Iseo has received a fair amount of publicity thanks to the artist Christo. His installation, The Floating Piers, linked the island of Monte Isola to the mainland. Over 16 days, more than a million people visited the lake of Iseo. Fortunately, it is not as crowded these days but it is still worth visiting even if the walkway is long gone. Popular during the summer months with the Milanese who want to avoid the Italian Riviera and the great lakes of Como, Garda and Maggiore, Lake Iseo is Lombardy’s  fourth largest lake.

Although a global finance and fashion hub, Lombardy as it stretches down from the Alps is the land of Franciacorta. This sparkling wine is a popular offering with the marinated sardines from the local waters that are served with polenta. If you make it over to Monte Isola, work up an appetite for their smoked salami by cycling around the world’s largest inland island. Officially it only takes an hour and half but there are so many small “agritourismi” to visit, it will definitely take a lot longer.

DSC_0371If you require a little more activity, walk the Ancient Valeriana Road or complete the Sarnico – Colli S.Fermo – Lago d’Endine – Valle del Freddo – Sarnico circuit by bike. The sheer walls climbing out of the lake offer a vast array of rock faces to ascend. If you prefer descents, Inferno Valley just north of Lovere is filled with narrow gorges and crystal clear waters, perfect for canyoning. Of course, a more pleasurable and relaxing lake experience would be a ride on a Riva boat, which are made here on the lake in Sarnico. Turn back the clock – imagine yourself as Sophia Loren or Bridget Bardot at the Venice Film Festival on a Riva Aquarama.

Even today, it has been given the honour of being one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. All this beauty makes Lake Iseo the idyllic location to celebrate your love. High in the hills is L’Albereta, an enchanting relais where your romantic dreams may just become your memorable proposal.
